IFC Chief Warns African SMEs Face Finance and Succession Crisis
Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), delivered a critical address at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. He urged African leaders and investors to shift from ambition to concrete execution to unlock the continent's economic potential. Diop highlighted that while Africa possesses significant demographic strength and resources, it faces systemic challenges, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). These include limited access to capital, regulatory constraints, and succession risks in family-owned businesses. He emphasized the private sector's role in job creation and outlined five key sectors for growth: energy, agriculture, transport, healthcare, and value-added manufacturing. Diop advocated for transitioning from raw material exports to local industrial capacity, leveraging initiatives like 'Mission 300' and 'AgriConnect'. The IFC is repositioning to catalyze investment rather than just providing direct finance, having committed $14.2 billion to Africa recently. Diop concluded with a strong call for decisive action, stating that emerging markets are now central engines of global growth, and Africa must build resilient macroeconomic foundations to realize its promise.
