ICMR-NIN Consortium Urges Healthier School Food Environments and Stricter Marketing Regulations in India
The 'Let's Fix Our Food' (LFOF) Consortium, led by the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), has released a policy document recommending healthier school food environments, stricter regulation of unhealthy food marketing to children, front-of-pack nutrition labelling, and taxation of high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods. The recommendations aim to combat rising obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children and adolescents in India. The document, titled 'Priority Policy Actions to Promote Healthier Diets and Food Environments for Children and Adolescents in India,' was launched by NITI Aayog Member (Health) M Srinivas during a workshop. The consortium includes partners such as UNICEF India, the World Health Organization, the Public Health Foundation of India, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The workshop also launched several knowledge products, including the Nutrition Environment Assessment Toolkit for Schools (NEAT-S) and an e-learning module on food labels.
