Ice Cream CEO Says $1,000 Monthly Childcare Subsidy Yields 128% ROI
Molly Moon Neitzel, founder and CEO of Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream in Seattle, describes her company's childcare reimbursement program. Employees receive up to $1,000 per month per child for daycare, and $4,200 annually for after-school and summer care for children up to age 12. Neitzel implemented the benefit after noticing talented parents were avoiding management roles due to childcare costs. Using a calculator from the group Moms First, her CFO calculated a 128% return on investment. The ROI stems from reduced absenteeism, lower turnover, improved productivity, and stronger recruitment. The company hires about 100 seasonal workers each summer from roughly 600 applicants, and 20% become year-round employees. Neitzel notes the program also encourages employee loyalty and even led two employees to have or expand their families.
