IBM to acquire HRL Laboratories to enhance quantum computing capabilities
IBM has agreed to acquire HRL Laboratories, a US-based R&D entity jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, to bolster its quantum computing efforts. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, will bring HRL's expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering, quantum sensors, and advanced materials to IBM. Boeing and GM will retain partnerships with IBM for quantum applications post-acquisition. IBM expects the acquisition to help industrialize quantum sensing and advance quantum materials research, including collaboration with Anderon, a quantum wafer foundry IBM established in 2026. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the end of Q3 2026. IBM recently reported flat Q2 2026 earnings with $17.2 billion in revenue.
