Hungary's President Signs Constitutional Amendment Ending His Term
Hungary's President Tamás Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment into law on July 18, 2026, ending his term effective midnight July 20. The amendment was passed by the new government of Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who defeated Viktor Orbán in April elections. Magyar had called on Sulyok, an Orbán appointee, to resign for failing to oppose Orbán's anti-democratic measures. When Sulyok refused, the Tisza party passed the amendment. Sulyok criticized the move as trampling on democratic values. Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer will assume presidential duties until a new president is elected within 30 days. The amendment also includes judicial reforms, an anti-corruption office, and a 12-year term limit for lawmakers. Orbán called the move tyranny, while Magyar said it fulfilled commitments to restore democratic norms.
