Hungary's New Government Led by Peter Magyar Takes Oath of Office

Ministers of Hungary’s newly formed government, led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar, officially took the oath of office before the national parliament in Budapest on May 12, 2026. The ceremony, which featured the national anthem and historic banners, was attended by members of the legislature. Earlier that day, President Tamas Sulyok signed decrees appointing 16 ministers at Sandor Palace, following their nomination by the Prime Minister and approval by parliament. This transition marks a significant political shift in Hungary, as the previous administration led by Viktor Orban has stepped down after 16 years in power. Orban’s Fidesz party has moved into opposition after losing the April 12 parliamentary elections to Magyar’s Tisza party, which secured 141 out of 199 seats. Magyar was elected Prime Minister on May 9 during the first session of the new parliament. The new cabinet is scheduled to hold its first working meeting on May 13. This event signifies the end of the long-standing Fidesz dominance and the beginning of a new political era under the Tisza party's leadership.
