Hugo Oliveira: The Coach Who Wants to Put the Goalkeeper at the Center of the Game
Strasbourg's new head coach Hugo Oliveira, a former goalkeeper and one of the first Portuguese to earn a UEFA A License specialized for goalkeepers, is implementing a revolutionary philosophy that places the goalkeeper at the heart of the team's game plan. The 22-year-old American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is being tested to become the starter, with two specialized goalkeeper coaches now at the club: Sébastien Gimenez (since 2024) and newly arrived Miguel Miranda. Oliveira emphasizes that the goalkeeper will be crucial as 'a true outfield player and the team's first attacker,' fully integrated into the construction of play. This approach, while rare, is gaining traction in top European clubs.
