Health Officials Investigate Local Hantavirus Case at Upstate NY School

Health officials in Ontario County, New York, are investigating a suspected case of hantavirus involving a high school student at Geneva High School. Authorities confirmed that this local case is unrelated to the deadly outbreak of the Andes strain aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which recently killed three passengers. The Andes strain is notable for its ability to spread between humans, whereas the hantavirus strains found in the United States are transmitted from rodents to humans and do not spread person-to-person. Consequently, the infected student does not need to quarantine, and there is no evidence of risk to other students or staff. The student has experienced mild symptoms, including fatigue and body aches, for several weeks. Public health officials emphasized the importance of taking precautions, such as wearing masks and gloves, when cleaning areas like attics, sheds, and garages where rodents may be present. This incident marks only the second suspected hantavirus case in the area in two decades, occurring amidst heightened global attention due to the separate cruise ship outbreak.
