Hantavirus Cruise Passengers Arrive in Australia for Quarantine

Six passengers, including five Australians and one New Zealander, have arrived in Perth after being repatriated from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which is at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak. The group landed at RAAF Base Pearce following a flight from the Netherlands, where they had waited after disembarking. Although all six individuals tested negative for the virus and remained asymptomatic prior to travel, they are undergoing strict health screening by the Australian Border Force. They will be transferred under police escort to the Bullsbrook Centre for National Resilience for a mandatory three-week quarantine. The flight crew will also voluntarily quarantine for two weeks, and the aircraft will be decontaminated. Health Minister Mark Butler indicated that further management arrangements are being coordinated with state governments in New South Wales and Queensland to cover the remainder of the virus's 42-day incubation period, ensuring alignment with World Health Organization guidelines. The outbreak linked to the cruise has currently resulted in 11 reported cases and three deaths across Europe.
