Haiti Announces Elections for End of 2026, Conditional on Security
Haiti's provisional electoral council announced on July 27, 2026, that presidential and legislative elections will be held in December 2026 and February 2027, contingent on an acceptable security climate. The first round is scheduled for December 13, 2026, and the second round for February 21, 2027. Haiti has not held elections since 2016, and President Jovenel Moïse, assassinated in 2021, has not been replaced. The country is ravaged by gang violence, which has driven nearly 1.5 million people from their homes. A previous election calendar announced in December 2025 for August 2026 has already become obsolete. CARICOM welcomed the announcement as an essential step. Candidate submissions are open until October 2, 2026, and voter registration began on July 20, 2026.
