Hague Court Rejects General Mladic’s Early Release Request on Health Grounds
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) has officially rejected a request for the early release of former Bosnian Serb army commander General Ratko Mladic, citing health reasons. The ruling, delivered by Court President Graciela Gatti Santana, determined that Mladic’s current confinement in the hospital wing of the UN detention facility in The Hague is neither inhumane nor degrading. The court emphasized that the general is receiving comprehensive medical care that aligns with international standards. Mladic has been hospitalized since 2024, receiving palliative care and remaining bedridden for the past eighteen months. This decision follows a previous rejection of a similar request in 2025. The latest urgent appeal was filed by his defense team on April 24, shortly after his son reported that Mladic had suffered a stroke. The defense had sought his transfer to Serbia for specialized treatment due to his deteriorating condition. However, the IRMCT maintained that the supervision and medical provisions within the detention center are sufficient, thereby denying the bid for freedom despite the severity of his health issues.
