Hague Court Denies Early Release for War Criminal Ratko Mladic

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) in The Hague has rejected a request for the early release of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic. IRMCT President Graciela Gatti Santana ruled that there were no compelling or exceptional circumstances justifying his transfer to Serbia for medical treatment. The decision, supported by the majority of consulted judges, affirmed that Mladic is receiving adequate medical care within international standards at a sophisticated prison hospital in The Hague. Judges emphasized that his detention conditions are not inhuman or degrading and noted that transferring him could pose additional health risks due to interrupted treatment continuity. Although Mladic is in the final stages of life, the court determined that his serious health condition alone does not warrant release. Judge Nyambe provided a dissenting opinion, arguing for release based on Mladic's terminal prognosis and need for family contact. The defense had previously filed an urgent request citing humanitarian reasons and irreversible health deterioration, but the court maintained that current facilities provide the best possible care for his comfort and treatment needs.
