Greenland Ice Sheet Melt Could Release Massive Methane Stores
New research indicates that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet could trigger the release of significant amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Scientists led by Mads Huuse from the University of Manchester analyzed seismic surveys and sediment cores from Melville Bay, discovering dozens of deep pockmarks on the seafloor. These features were formed when glacial meltwater flushed out frozen methane hydrates after the last glacial maximum. The study reveals that meltwater, rather than just warming temperatures, can destabilize these hydrate stores, which were previously considered stable. While the historical release in Melville Bay may have amounted to 130 million tonnes over a century, researchers warn that similar mechanisms could occur again as glaciers retreat due to current climate change. With the Antarctic ice sheet potentially holding even larger reserves, the total polar methane storage is estimated between 100 billion and 760 billion tonnes. This finding highlights a previously overlooked feedback loop where receding ice sheets accelerate global warming by releasing trapped methane, posing a serious risk to future climate stability.
