Geneva to host Gukesh-Sindarov World chess championship match
Geneva, Switzerland, will host the 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship match between reigning champion D. Gukesh of India and challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan from November 25 to December 15. Both players are 20 years old, making this the youngest world title match in chess history. Gukesh won the title by defeating China's Ding Liren in Singapore two years ago, while Sindarov earned his challenger status by winning the Candidates tournament. FIDE interim president Viswanathan Anand stated that several countries, including India, the United States, and Cyprus, had expressed interest in hosting, but FIDE chose Geneva for its tradition of bringing nations together. The match marks the return of a world championship event to Switzerland 22 years after the 2004 Brissago match.
