General Dynamics Electric Boat Awarded $2.31bn Contract for Virginia-class Submarines

General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), a subsidiary of General Dynamics, has secured a $2.31 billion contract modification from the US Naval Sea Systems Command. This agreement focuses on supplying long lead time materials and initiating initial manufacturing work for the Virginia-class Block VI submarines. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2035. Funding for this contract comprises $1.97 billion from fiscal 2026 shipbuilding and conversion funds, along with $150 million from fiscal 2025 funds. While GDEB serves as the primary contractor, the work distribution involves multiple locations across the United States. Sunnyvale, California, will handle approximately 30% of the effort, with significant contributions also coming from Chesapeake, Virginia; Minneapolis, Minnesota; York, Pennsylvania; and Tucson, Arizona. This award aligns with the US Department of the Navy’s broader budget strategy for Fiscal Year 2027, which allocates substantial resources for shipbuilding, including the acquisition of new Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines. This development follows previous contract modifications awarded to GDEB in 2025 for design work and Block V construction, underscoring the continued expansion and modernization of the US Navy's underwater fleet capabilities through sustained industrial partnerships.
