Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake indicted for match-fixing in Lanka Premier League
Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted by the Hambantota High Court for attempting to lure fellow player Tharindu Ratnayake into match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL). The Attorney General's Department confirmed this is the first such indictment of a national-level cricketer under Sri Lanka's recently-introduced anti-corruption law. Senanayake, 40, who played for Sri Lanka from 2012 to 2016 and was part of the 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad, was arrested and released on bail in 2023. Local media reports also allege he contacted two other cricketers from Dubai to persuade them to engage in match-fixing. The case marks a significant step in Sri Lanka's crackdown on corruption in cricket.
