Former Rep. Tim Murphy dies at age 73
Former U.S. Representative Tim Murphy, a Pennsylvania Republican who served nearly 15 years in Congress and was a prominent advocate for mental health issues, died at age 73 of an apparent heart attack. A psychologist by training, Murphy championed coordinated care for mental and physical illnesses and raised awareness about synthetic opioid addiction, drawing on his own experience with fentanyl after a 2005 vehicle rollover in Iraq. His congressional career ended abruptly in October 2017 when the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Murphy, a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus, had urged a woman he was having an affair with to get an abortion. He resigned within two days. Before Congress, Murphy served in the Pennsylvania state Senate and worked as a psychologist, teacher, and radio/TV personality. Pennsylvania colleagues remembered him as a dedicated public servant and mentor.
