Former CHP Leader Özgür Özel Founds New Party Yeni Parti
Former CHP leader Özgür Özel announced the founding of a new party called Yeni Parti (New Party) during a parliamentary group meeting, citing blocked democratic paths within the CHP. Up to 100 of 132 CHP deputies and about one million members are expected to follow him, rejecting what they call a 'hostile takeover' by former chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who was reinstated by a court in May after President Erdoğan's intervention. Özel, a pharmacist from Manisa, had modernized the CHP alongside Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, leading to major electoral victories in 2024. However, Erdoğan responded by arresting CHP mayors, including İmamoğlu in March 2025. Özel organized a solidarity campaign but was removed by court order. He plans to register Yeni Parti next week, with polls showing 30% support. However, the AKP has applied to lift his parliamentary immunity, risking his imprisonment.
