Former Cardinals Prospect Turned Team Owner and Commissioner Dies at 87
Elwood 'Woody' Hahn, a former St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitcher who went on to become a team co-owner and commissioner of multiple collegiate athletic conferences, died on July 9, 2026, at the age of 87. Hahn signed with the Cardinals in 1960 and played three seasons in the minors, reaching Double-A. After his playing career ended in 1963, he became a physical education teacher in Montana, then general manager and co-owner of the Billings Mustangs minor league baseball team. He later served as commissioner of the Continental Divide Conference and the Pacific West Conference, helping shape NCAA Division II athletics in the western United States. His obituary noted that few people in sports can claim to have played professionally, co-owned a minor league team, and served as commissioner of three different collegiate leagues.
