Five Men Charged in Alberta Kidnapping and Extortion Plot

Calgary police have charged five men in connection with an elaborate extortion scheme involving the kidnapping of an Edmonton resident. On May 6, four suspects abducted the victim at gunpoint from his home in Edmonton and drove him to a residence in Calgary’s Cityscape community. The plot aimed to force the victim to lure a friend, the intended extortion target, out of the home. When the victim refused, he was assaulted. Occupants of the Calgary residence contacted police after being threatened by firearms outside their home. Police arrested two suspects during a traffic stop shortly after the incident and two more on May 12. A fifth suspect, Gagandeep Singh, remains wanted. Investigators seized a privately manufactured firearm during the probe. Authorities describe this incident as a significant escalation in extortion-related violence targeting Calgary’s South Asian community, noting 45 such incidents since April 2025. The charged individuals face multiple counts, including kidnapping with a firearm, unlawful confinement, and assault.
