Five Italians Presumed Dead in Maldives Diving Accident

Authorities in the Maldives presume that five Italian nationals have died following a diving accident in the Vaavu Atoll, south of the capital Malé. The group, which included a marine biology professor from the University of Genoa, her daughter, and two young scientists, went missing after attempting to explore caves at depths of up to 50 meters. A large-scale search operation involving planes and speedboats was launched after they failed to return. During the search, a body was discovered in a cave at a depth of 60 meters. The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed the assumption that the divers perished during the expedition, while local authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. The University of Genoa expressed condolences, confirming the identities of several victims. The fifth victim's identity remains initially unconfirmed.
