Five Italians Die in Scuba Diving Accident in Maldives

Five Italian nationals have died in a scuba diving accident while exploring underwater caves in the Vaavu Atoll of the Maldives. The incident occurred on Thursday at a depth of approximately 50 meters. According to Italy's foreign ministry, the victims' bodies were recovered from inside a 60-meter-long cave. Four of the deceased were affiliated with the University of Genoa: Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology; her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, a biomedical engineering student; Muriel Oddenino, a research assistant; and Federico Gualtieri, a recent marine ecology graduate. The fifth victim was identified as Gianluca Benedetti, a dive operator. The University of Genoa issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and extending sympathy to the families and colleagues of the victims. An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway. The Italian Embassy in Sri Lanka is providing consular assistance and working to contact the families of the deceased. This tragedy highlights the risks associated with deep cave diving operations in the region.
