Five Italians Die in Scuba Diving Accident in Maldives

Five Italian nationals, including a marine biology professor, her daughter, and two researchers from the University of Genoa, died in a scuba diving tragedy in the Maldives. The incident occurred in Vaavu Atoll while the group was attempting to explore underwater caves at a depth of approximately 50 meters. Local authorities described it as the worst single diving accident in the archipelago's history. Following reports that the divers failed to return, the Maldives National Defence Force launched a major search operation involving aircraft, speedboats, and coastguard vessels. One body was recovered inside a cave extending to 60 meters, with officials believing the remaining four victims are also trapped within. Police noted that rough weather conditions and a yellow warning for passenger boats were in effect at the time. This tragedy highlights recent safety concerns in the popular tourist destination, where over 100 tourists have died in marine-related incidents in the past six years, including 42 diving or snorkeling accidents.
