Five Italians Die in Maldives Cave Diving Accident

Five Italian citizens, including renowned marine biology professor Monica Montefalcone, died during a diving expedition in the Maldives. The tragedy occurred in Vaavu Atoll near the Alimathà resort, where the group was exploring underwater caves approximately 50 meters deep. Among the victims were Montefalcone’s daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, and two of her research collaborators, Federico Gualtieri and Muriel Oddenino, as well as Gianluca Benedetti, the operations director for the liveaboard company Albatros Top Boat. Local authorities reported that the alarm was raised around 1:45 p.m. after the divers disappeared. Recovery efforts by the Maldives Coast Guard were hindered by dangerous conditions, including strong winds and the complexity of the submerged cave system, which reaches depths of 60 meters. The first body was recovered from inside the cave, with officials believing the others were trapped in the same location. The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed the deaths and is providing consular assistance to the families. This incident has shocked the international scientific community, given Montefalcone’s significant contributions to the study of coral reefs and marine ecosystems in the region.
