Five Italian Tourists Killed in Maldives Cave Diving Accident
Five Italian nationals died in a scuba diving accident while exploring underwater caves in the Vaavu Atoll of the Maldives, according to Italy's foreign ministry. The victims, identified by the University of Genoa as marine biology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, and researchers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri, were believed to have perished at a depth of 50 meters. The Maldives National Defence Force confirmed that one body was recovered from inside a cave extending to 60 meters, while search operations for the remaining four continue amidst rough weather conditions. Twenty other Italians aboard the dive boat 'Duke of York' are safe. This incident marks the worst single diving accident in the archipelago's recent history. Italian authorities, including an expert diver and the ambassador to Colombo, are assisting local coast guard efforts. Although marine accidents are relatively rare in the region, statistics indicate over 100 tourist deaths in marine-related incidents in the past six years, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in this popular luxury diving destination.
