UK fintech Pockit recruits founder of Burger King Kazakhstan
British fintech Pockit, based in Cardiff, has appointed Kazakh businessman Anuar Utemuratov as a director. Utemuratov, a former JP Morgan analyst, founded the Burger King Kazakhstan franchise in 2012, growing it to over 50 restaurants before selling it in 2025. He is the son of billionaire Bulat Utemuratov. Pockit, which provides prepaid accounts to customers without credit scores, also secured debt financing from Anchorgate Management, controlled by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, known for designing iconic railway stations. Other notable shareholders include former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and Revolut chair Martin Gilbert. Founded in 2014, Pockit raised $10m in 2023 and acquired fintech Monese in 2024. Founder Virraj Jatania stated the company targets 20-22 million UK adults poorly served by mainstream banks, including gig economy workers and those with thin credit records.
