FIFPro Demands Calendar Reduction and Warns of Player Exploitation

FIFPRO, the global union for professional footballers, convened a two-day meeting in Prague with representatives from 33 European players' unions to address critical issues affecting the sport. Led by FIFPRO World President Sergio Marchi, the discussions focused on reducing the congested international match calendar to prioritize player health and mental well-being. The union also highlighted significant concerns regarding the equitable distribution of revenue generated by the football industry. Marchi criticized the current system as an abuse of players' rights for commercial gain without fair compensation. Additionally, the meeting addressed the impact of technological advancements on player image rights and commercial exploitation. Other key topics included contractual breaches, non-payment of salaries, and the lack of collective bargaining agreements in many European leagues, which leaves numerous players without minimum salary guarantees. UEFA Deputy General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti also participated, indicating high-level engagement with these structural challenges. The outcome emphasizes an urgent call for regulatory reforms to protect athletes from physical burnout and financial inequity.
