FIFA Considers Expanding 2030 World Cup to 64 Teams
The 2030 FIFA World Cup, already set to be the largest in history with 48 teams across six countries (Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay), may be expanded further to 64 teams. FIFA President Gianni Infantino indicated during the current 2026 World Cup that expansion is a topic to be 'definitely' considered after the tournament, responding to demands from South American representatives. The tournament is scheduled from June 8 to July 21, 2030, making it the longest World Cup at 44 days. Three opening matches will be held in South America to celebrate the centenary, with teams then traveling to Europe and Africa for subsequent games. Qualification in Europe is being reformed, with the top 36 Nations League teams divided into three groups of 12, playing six matches each. The largest stadiums include the renovated Camp Nou (103,000 capacity) and the new Hassan II Stadium near Casablanca (115,000 capacity), which would be the world's largest football stadium.
