Faustino Oro to Debut as Grandmaster at Gold Chess Challenge in Norway

Twelve-year-old Argentine chess prodigy Faustino Oro is set to make his official debut as a Grandmaster at the Gold Chess Challenge in Oslo, Norway. Starting on Friday, May 15, 2026, Oro will compete in a closed round-robin tournament featuring ten international players until May 20. This marks his first competition after achieving historic status in Sardinia, where he became the second youngest Grandmaster in history at 12 years, 6 months, and 26 days, trailing only American Abhimanyu Mishra. Oro secured the title by surpassing the 2,500 Elo rating barrier and obtaining his third and final Grandmaster norm, having previously earned two norms in Madrid and Buenos Aires during 2025. Although he lost his final match in Sardinia to Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, his earlier undefeated performance mathematically guaranteed the title. The upcoming event in Oslo features classical time controls and prohibits draws by agreement before the 30th move to encourage competitive play.
