European Digital Bank bunq Applies for Full Banking License in Mexico
Amsterdam-based digital bank bunq has filed for a comprehensive banking license in Mexico, marking a significant step in its international expansion strategy. The application, submitted to the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) in partnership with the central bank Banxico, seeks approval for an Institución de Banca Múltiple. If approved, this status will allow bunq to offer full banking services, including multi-currency accounts and deposit protection via Mexico’s IPAB. The move targets globally mobile professionals, expats, and cross-border entrepreneurs who require seamless financial solutions across borders. This initiative aligns with bunq’s broader goal of becoming the world’s first truly global digital bank, following its recent pursuit of a US banking license. The Mexican market presents both opportunity and challenge, characterized by rapid digital finance growth and intense competition from established players like Brazil’s Nubank, as well as newcomers like Revolut. Bunq aims to differentiate itself through AI-powered personalization and superior cross-border capabilities. While regulatory approval may take months, analysts view the timing as strategic, potentially introducing new competition to Mexico’s evolving fintech landscape.
