AI email startup Scape aims to challenge Gmail with agent-driven inbox
Scape, a Stockholm-based desktop email app founded by two 23-year-old Swedes, Melvin Hagberg and Elis Hodzic, is opening a waitlist after raising $3.2 million from Y Combinator, General Catalyst, FundersClub, and other investors. The app uses AI agents to not just help write emails but to take actions based on email content, such as suggesting replies with calendar integration, filling out order forms, and remembering past conversations via a built-in meeting recorder. Y Combinator partner Gustaf Alströmer believes Scape could finally pry users away from Gmail. The app keeps users in control by not sending messages automatically. Scape plans to monetize through subscriptions, though pricing is not yet disclosed. It enters a crowded market including Superhuman and Google's own Gemini features in Gmail. The startup pivoted from customer support software and has backing from Swedish tech figures including Candy Crush cofounder Sebastian Knutsson.
