Dutch Ornithologist Identified as Likely Hantavirus Patient Zero on MV Hondius Cruise

Leo Schilperoord, a 70-year-old Dutch ornithologist, has been identified as the probable patient zero in a hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Schilperoord died on April 11 while the vessel was traversing the Atlantic Ocean en route from Argentina to Cape Verde. His wife, Mirjam, aged 69, developed symptoms shortly after his death and passed away two weeks later in a Johannesburg hospital after being evacuated to South Africa. The World Health Organization confirmed the outbreak involved the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is notable for its potential person-to-person transmission. In addition to the Dutch couple, a British passenger also died from the infection, and several French nationals were repatriated with symptoms. The couple, described by their community in Friesland as passionate nature lovers, had recently completed a wildlife observation trip in South America before boarding the Oceanwide Expeditions cruise. This tragic incident has drawn international attention due to the rare nature of the virus transmission in a maritime setting and the fatal outcome for multiple passengers.
