Drone Captures First-Ever Footage of Humpback Whale Birth Off Australia
A drone has filmed the birth of a humpback whale calf off the coast of Kingscliff, New South Wales, Australia, marking a world premiere. Drone pilot Alex Forrest from the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) observed a female moving slower than her group, initially mistaking a red cloud in the water for a predator attack. The calf surfaced shortly after, confirming the birth. This is only the fourth time a humpback whale birth has been filmed and the first using a drone, captured from over 100 meters away per Australian regulations. Marine biologist Vanessa Pirotta called it a 'magical moment' and noted the calf instinctively swam to the surface. The footage challenges the long-held belief that humpback whales give birth exclusively in tropical waters, as this birth occurred during their annual migration along Australia's east coast. The scientific evaluation of the footage is expected to expand limited knowledge about humpback whale reproduction.
