Driver Jailed for Killing Award-Winning Author Brenda Walker in Perth Crash

Lucas Martins Da Silva, a 31-year-old carpenter, has been sentenced to four years in prison for dangerous driving causing the death of award-winning Australian author Brenda Walker. The fatal incident occurred in December 2024 in Perth’s Kings Park, where Walker, 67, was struck while crossing the street. Court proceedings revealed that Da Silva was traveling at 104km/h in a 60km/h zone, having admitted to being tired while driving to work. Although he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse, stating he was not thrill-seeking but rather fatigued from working extra shifts, District Court Judge Wendy Gillan emphasized the need for significant punishment to deter similar behavior. Walker, a Winthrop Professor at the University of Western Australia and sister of musician Don Walker, suffered catastrophic injuries despite immediate medical aid. Her husband, Alex Ruskulis, described the loss as devastating, noting the cruel irony of her surviving breast cancer only to die in such circumstances.
