Documentary 'Speechless' Examines Suppression of Debate in Academia

Toronto filmmaker Ric Esther Bienstock’s new documentary, Speechless, investigates the shifting climate within North American and UK universities, where ideological debates are increasingly stifled by claims of harm. The film explores how campus controversies regarding race, gender, and social justice have escalated through viral outrage and institutional pressure, often silencing dissenting voices. Bienstock embeds with students, professors, and administrators at prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, as well as New College of Florida, which recently dismantled its DEI office. The documentary highlights specific flashpoints, such as the resignation of professor Bret Weinstein from Evergreen State College following protests over a 'Day of Absence' event. By featuring perspectives from across the ideological spectrum, including progressive critics and conservative activists, the film argues that the traditional university role of wrestling with challenging ideas has been replaced by a culture of safetyism. This trend is shown to extend beyond campus grounds, influencing broader societal discourse.
