US Department of Energy Invests in Fermilab Projects to Accelerate AI-Enabled Scientific Discovery
The U.S. Department of Energy announced funding for Fermilab through the Genesis Mission, a national initiative to build an integrated science discovery platform combining AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced instruments. Fermilab received awards for a leading AI/ML project and eight collaborative projects. The lead project will develop AI/ML-based resonance control algorithms to improve particle accelerator performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency, benefiting facilities like Fermilab's PIP-II, SLAC's LCLS-SC, and Brookhaven's EIC. Partners include national labs, universities, and industry partner xLight Inc. Fermilab Director Norbert Holtkamp and CTO Anna Grassellino highlighted the investment's role in advancing scientific discovery and next-generation technologies. The Phase I awards aim to identify transformative pathways for future scaling.
