US Department of Energy Invests in Fermilab Projects to Accelerate AI-Enabled Scientific Discovery
The U.S. Department of Energy announced funding for Fermilab through the Genesis Mission, a national initiative to build an integrated science discovery platform combining AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced instruments. Fermilab received awards for a leading AI/ML project and eight collaborative projects. The Fermilab-led project will develop AI/ML-based resonance control algorithms to improve particle accelerator performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency, particularly for superconducting radio-frequency cavities. Partners include national labs, universities, and industry partner xLight Inc. Fermilab Director Norbert Holtkamp stated the investment strengthens scientific discovery and next-generation technology development. The Phase I awards aim to identify promising pathways for transformative scientific capabilities and establish a foundation for future scaling.
