Democratic Party Rejects Meloni's Electoral Law Appeal, Citing Lack of Dialogue Conditions

Italy's center-right majority, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has reaffirmed its commitment to reforming the electoral law to ensure government stability, inviting opposition parties to dialogue. However, the Democratic Party (PD) has firmly rejected this appeal. PD Senator Alessandro Alfieri stated that conditions for meaningful discussion are absent, criticizing the majority for presenting a unilateral draft with disproportionate bonuses rather than starting from scratch. The PD argues that the current proposal is unacceptable and that the majority is only seeking dialogue due to internal divisions. Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani defended the majority's approach, asserting their openness to discussion while emphasizing the need for a law that guarantees governability. Other opposition groups, including the Green-Left Alliance and Più Europa, supported the PD's stance, labeling the proposed law as unconstitutional and untenable. The disagreement highlights deep political fractures regarding democratic rules and electoral systems in Italy, with the opposition accusing the government of prioritizing its own interests over collaborative legislative processes.
