Delhi government orders schools to form child protection panels by month end or face action
The Delhi government has directed all 5,633 schools in the capital to establish child protection committees by July 31, as part of a 'Child Protection Month' initiative. Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewed safety measures and ordered implementation of a standard operating procedure for handling POCSO Act cases. Schools must also submit compliance certificates for a safety checklist issued by the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR). The L-G warned of strict action under the POCSO Act for non-compliance. Joint inspection teams comprising parents, education and women and child development officials, police, and school heads are being formed. Awareness campaigns on POCSO, cyber safety, and drug abuse will be conducted through parent-teacher meetings and other materials. An Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police has been appointed in each district as nodal officer for child safety cases.
