The cruise liner Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, will remain docked in Bordeaux for an additional night following a quarantine imposed due to a gastroenteritis outbreak. Initially scheduled to depart Thursday evening, the departure was postponed to Friday morning at 6:30 a.m. to ensure passenger comfort and avoid rough weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. The ship, carrying over 1,700 people including 1,233 passengers, mostly elderly British and Irish citizens, had been placed in quarantine by the Gironde prefecture upon arrival Wednesday amid initial uncertainty and international concern regarding hantavirus. However, tests confirmed the illness was viral gastroenteritis, leading authorities to lift the disembarkation ban Wednesday evening. During the voyage, which began in the Shetland Islands and included stops in Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest, a 92-year-old passenger died from a cardiac arrest unrelated to the epidemic. The vessel is now set to continue its itinerary to Ferrol, Spain, on Saturday. The incident highlights health protocols in maritime travel and the impact of medical emergencies on cruise schedules.
