Countdown Grant Funds Research on Mitochondrial Clearance for Disease Therapy

Countdown, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating mitochondrial science, has awarded a new research grant to Dr. Elias Adriaenssens at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Austria. The funding supports a project titled "From Hypoxia to Therapy: Unlocking Mitochondrial Clearance Pathways for Disease Treatment." This research aims to elucidate how cells identify and remove damaged mitochondria, a process critical for cellular health and energy production. While hypoxia therapy shows promise for treating conditions like Parkinson’s disease and age-related decline, current methods involving systemic low-oxygen exposure are clinically impractical and potentially harmful. Dr. Adriaenssens’ work seeks to isolate the beneficial mitochondrial clearance mechanisms triggered by hypoxia without inducing dangerous systemic stress responses. By uncovering alternative quality-control pathways, the study aims to develop patient-compatible therapies that mimic protective hypoxic effects.
