Conservative MP Helen Grant to Stand Down at Next General Election
Helen Grant, the Conservative MP for Maidstone & Malling, has announced she will stand down at the next general election, expected in 2029. Grant, first elected in 2010, stated that after 19 years in Parliament, and following major cancer surgery in 2023-24, she believes it is the right time to pass the baton. She noted that her own selection in 2008 followed Ann Widdecombe's retirement announcement, giving her time to build a profile, and she wishes to afford her successor the same opportunity. Grant has informed party leader Kemi Badenoch of her decision and will also step down as Shadow Solicitor General at the next reshuffle. She will continue to serve her constituency fully until the election and support her successor. The announcement was delayed out of respect following the death of Ann Widdecombe earlier that day.
