Chuck Russell, Director of 'The Mask' and 'The Scorpion King,' Dies at 74
Chuck Russell, the director of the hit 1994 Jim Carrey comedy 'The Mask' and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's action fantasy 'The Scorpion King,' has died at age 74. Russell's family told TMZ that the filmmaker died unexpectedly on Wednesday in San Diego. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Born Charles Raymond Russell on May 9, 1952, in Park Ridge, Illinois, his Hollywood career began as a production coordinator in 1976. He co-wrote 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors' (1987), on which he also made his directorial debut, and directed the remake of 'The Blob' (1988). 'The Mask' was a worldwide blockbuster making $351.8 million against an $18 million budget and earned a Best Visual Effects Oscar nomination. Russell also directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in 'Eraser' (1995), and his last credited directorial work was the 2024 supernatural horror 'Witchboard.'
