CFR Appoints Sonja Brookins Santelises to Lead Richard Haass Center for Education
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has appointed Sonja Brookins Santelises as vice president, senior fellow, and director of the newly established Richard Haass Center for Education, effective September 8, 2025, based in Washington, DC. The center, founded in June 2025, aims to centralize and expand CFR's educational work, creating resources for secondary and postsecondary classrooms and promoting civil discourse on global affairs. Santelises, a nationally recognized educator, previously served as CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools for a decade, overseeing a $1.9 billion budget and reducing low-performing schools. She also serves as superintendent in residence at Yale School of Management's Broad Center. CFR President Michael Froman praised her expertise in public education and civic leadership. Santelises holds degrees from Brown University, Columbia University, and Harvard University.
