Cartoonist Khalid Albaih Brings 'Professional Foreigner' Perspective to Stockholm Comics Festival

Award-winning human rights activist and satirical cartoonist Khalid Albaih is set to attend the Stockholm International Comics Festival, bringing his unique perspective as a self-described 'professional foreigner.' Born in Romania and raised in Sudan and Qatar before settling in Norway, Albaih draws on experiences from three continents. His latest book, 'Diary from a Professional Foreigner,' explores themes of rootlessness and the value of navigating new cultural environments. During the festival at Kulturhuset in Stockholm, Albaih will discuss the challenges of creating concise, critical satire in an era of digital noise and isolated online silos. He contrasts Western romanticization of provocative art with the harsh realities of political oppression he faced in Sudan and censorship in Doha, which led him to join a sanctuary program in Copenhagen. Albaih notes that while his work targets authoritarian leaders, internet algorithms often prevent those intended audiences from seeing his critiques. The festival, occurring May 16-17, also features other international and Swedish creators and includes the presentation of the 'Urhunden' prize for outstanding comic books.
