Camden Ables Wins State Discus Gold, Continuing Family Legacy
Hawley High School junior Camden Ables secured the Class 2A state discus title at the UIL state track and field meet in Austin, Texas. Despite initial nerves and fouling on three of his first four attempts, Ables recovered to throw 172 feet, 3 inches on his fifth attempt, claiming the gold medal. He followed this with a 170-2 throw on his final attempt. This victory adds to his family's distinguished history in Texas high school track and field; his mother, Andrea Ables, won state gold in 1998, while his father, Mitch Ables, and brother, Keagan Ables, won titles in 2022. Beyond track, Ables is a notable football prospect, playing tight end with over 2,200 career receiving yards. He currently holds NCAA Division I offers from Tarleton State and the University of Texas-El Paso. Ables credits his discus success with demonstrating his explosiveness to college recruiters. As he looks toward his senior year, he aims to exceed 200 feet in discus while keeping his college football options open.
