Burnham Government to Scrap Starmer's Digital ID Scheme
Incoming UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham plans to scrap the digital ID scheme proposed by his predecessor Keir Starmer, according to Deputy Labour Leader Lucy Powell. Speaking on the BBC, Powell said the move would allow the government to focus on the cost of living and economic reform. The scheme, announced last September to combat illegal working, had raised privacy concerns. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimated it would cost £1.8 billion, which will now be reallocated. Powell also indicated a 'more pragmatic approach' to North Sea oil and gas drilling, suggesting possible new licences despite the 2024 Labour manifesto pledge against them. She described this as a 'change of emphasis' rather than a policy shift, aiming to balance energy security with the transition to clean energy.
