BIMSTEC security chiefs vow joint action against terrorism, endorse maritime law enforcement principles
The national security chiefs of BIMSTEC nations (India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan) met in New Delhi on July 16, 2026, hosted by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. They pledged joint action against terrorism and organized crime, and endorsed new guiding principles for maritime law enforcement coordination. The meeting adopted guidelines for maritime humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, aiming to expedite regional relief operations. The security chiefs also discussed cybersecurity, energy security, connectivity, disaster management, and emerging threats. As BIMSTEC approaches its 30th anniversary, the leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing collaboration and institutional capacities to address diverse security challenges in the Bay of Bengal region.
