Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns Citing Health Issues
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, a long-time ally of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resigned on July 24, 2026, two years before his term ended. In his resignation letter to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the 76-year-old cited serious health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney complications, and a newly diagnosed autonomic neuropathy causing brief loss of consciousness. His resignation follows speculation that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government was uncomfortable with him, and reports that he recently contacted Hasina—which he denied. Hasina fled to India in August 2024 and recently announced plans to return by December despite a death sentence.
