Azerbaijan Launches Offshore Wind Measurement Campaign with LiDAR in Caspian Sea
EOLOS Floating LiDAR Solutions has officially commissioned its FLS200 integrated floating LiDAR buoy at an offshore wind development site operated by the Azerbaijan Green Energy Company (AGEC) in the Caspian Sea. This initiative marks the first offshore wind site assessment of its kind in the region. The contract was secured by EOLOS in January 2026 following a tender process where OWC, part of the ABL Group, served as the technical advisor. The deployment is part of a broader agreement between AGEC and Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy to conduct preliminary research for a potential offshore wind project. Previously, the Ministry had partnered with Clean Energy Capital, an AGEC subsidiary, to assess a project with an initial capacity of 200 MW, scalable to 600 MW. The current measurement campaign, expected to last one year, utilizes Stage 3-accredited technology to monitor wind, metocean conditions, and biofouling. The primary objective is to generate bank-grade datasets essential for selecting appropriate turbines and foundations, signaling a significant step in Azerbaijan's diversification into renewable energy sources.
